William “Bill” Dawson Staggs, longtime Hobbs resident, Bill Staggs, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 9, 2021 after a brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Karen Staggs of Hobbs; a son Kirk Staggs (wife, Vickie Staggs) of Lubbock, TX; four daughters, Taleta Smith of Lubbock, TX, Candise Weldy of Hobbs, NM, Sandra Peterson of Oklahoma and Trisha Rogers of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Mary Lynn Williams (husband, Kenneth Williams); a brother Jerry Staggs (wife Marilyn Staggs) of Ackerly, TX; brothers-in-law Roy “Buster” Hill and Lex Hill (wife Stephanie Hill) of Hobbs. He also is survived by nine grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews that he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Wiley Staggs and Alda (Harrison) Staggs of Gail, TX. Bill was born on August 22, 1936 in Ovalo, Texas. He was one of four in the very first graduating class of Borden County High School in Gail, TX . He attended Texas Tech University and served in the US Naval Reserve. Bill settled in Hobbs in 1968 and opened The Supply House in 1987. Bill was very active in his community. He was an active member of Jefferson Street Church of Christ, and he coached girls softball for many years. He was a member of the Lea County Road Riders, the Lions Club, the Shriners, and was a Past Master of the Hobbs Masonic Lodge. Since 2003, Bill was active alongside his wife, Karen in the Hobbs, NM Kennel Club. They consistently served on the board of directors (he was the current Vice-President). They enjoyed years of traveling to shows across the region with their beloved dogs. Bill was known on the show circuit, just as he was at home in Hobbs, as a soft-spoken, big hearted man who knew everyone, never met a stranger, and who always had a kind word for every person he spoke to...and he spoke to everyone.
