William Coy Stone, 81, was born September 22, 1934 in Carlsbad, NM to Coy Smith and Mattye Marie Stone. He grew up in Hobbs and graduated from Hobbs High School in 1952. He then obtained his undergraduate degree from Baylor University in 1956. In 1960, Dr. Stone earned his medical degree from Tulane University making him a 3rd generation medical doctor. He completed his rotating internship from 1960-1961 followed by his general surgery residency in 1965 at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. During this time, he met Ruth Carolyn Vaughn who was a nurse at Parkland. Dr. Stone and Carolyn married on November 3, 1963 in Greenville, Texas.
Dr. Stone served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in Korea from 1965-1967. Upon returning to Hobbs, Dr. Stone worked briefly as a partner with his father, Dr. Coy Stone. He then joined with other local doctors to open and operate Norte Vista Medical Center where he practiced as a general surgeon for thirty eight years. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Parkland Surgical Society, and Southwestern Surgical Society.
Hobbies included gardening and caring for his precious dogs. Dr. Stone was an active member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church.
He leaves behind his wife Carolyn, one son Steven Stone of Leander, Texas; one daughter Allison Ausbern of Ft. Worth, Texas; one sister Sandra Lynn Gassaway of Springtown, Texas; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, William Kent Stone in 1973.
