A funeral service for William Slim Standhope Newman of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at Jefferson Street Church of Christ. Clay Martin will officiate. Burial will follow services at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1 6 p.m. Thursday at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home with the family in attendance from 3 6 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope.
Mr. Newman, 89, died July, 27, 2010, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born September 29, 1920, in Santa Anna, Texas. He married Alta Geneva Langford Newman on February 16, 1942, in Dora, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on December 9, 2009.
Slim served in the Army Air Force from October 26, 1942, to September 22, 1945. He was discharged with an honorable discharge. Slim was a farmer after being discharged from the military. He became a licensed barber in 1956 and started Stateline Barber Shop in 1960. Slim was the owner and operator of the barber shop for 25 years and retired in 1982. William was also an ordained minister.
He was a member of Jefferson Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Stan Newman of Hobbs, Donald Newman of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Carl Newman of Hobbs three daughters, Pat Fore of Chowchilla, California, Carolyn Hornton of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, and Virginia Boynton of Hobbs brother, Johnny Newman of Pueblo West, Colorado, sister, Ida Mae Sanders of Roswell, New Mexico.
Slim was preceded in death by his wife Alta mother, Agnes May Newman father, William Claudius Newman brother, Grover Newman and sister, Alma Mears.
