Spud as born February 28, 1920, in Comanche County, Texas, to Hobert and Eunice Cox. He spent his childhood in Comanche County and Erath County, Texas, on the farm. He met Ruby Prebble Thomason the night of his 20th birthday party while working near Brownfield, Texas. This two year romance was interrupted when Spud was drafted into the US Army during WWII. After training at Riverside, California, and Ft. Lewis, Washington, he sailed to Hilo, Hawaii and was stationed at Schofield Army Base in Honolulu. He later served in the South Pacific Theatre in Guadalcanal, New Britain and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on November 23, 1945, as a Sergeant with 4 bronze stars, combat infantry badge, six overseas service bars, AsiaticPacific campaign medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, good conduct medal, victory ribbon and one service stripe. He served in the battles of BismarckArchipelago, Southern Philippines Luzon and Western Pacific GO 33 WD45. After nearly 45 months of continuous service he returned to marry Prebble on January 5, 1946. In 1947, he began a long career in the oilfields with Cities Service in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Montana, settling in Hobbs on May 12, 1952, where they raised six children Wallace, Hollis, Bobby, Sherry, Tim and Trisha. Prebble preceded him in death on September 22, 1976. He retired from Cities Service on January 1, 1983. Spud attended Fellowship of Beliwevers.
He was a longtime supporter of youth coaching baseball, supporting 4H and FFA, raising affordable show lambs and goats. He was a very positive, witty man, who enjoyed friendships and dancing. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, lifetime member of the Hobbs VFW and a permanent fixture at the Saturday night senior dances with the Country Gentlemen at the Lovington VFW.
Spud is survived by his children and their spouses ten grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren.
Spud was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother Hobert V. Cox sisters Estelle Reese and Bonita Cox brothersinlaw Edwin Reese and Jim Kinchen and sisterinlaw Glenna Cox.
There will be a celebration of the life of Spud Cox on Friday, April 2, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Christian Center, located on the corner of Lovington Highway and College Lane. Officiating at the service will be Pastor John Ayres, Pastor David Matkins, Pastor Jotty Kinney and Pastor Ty Bean. Cremation has already taken place.
