A memorial service will be held for Virginia Irene Kline Johnson, longtime resident of Hobbs, at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday, July 25, at 10:00 a.m., with Dr. Gary Dill officiating. Internment will be at First Presbyterian Columbarium.
Born on May 7, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas, Virginia was a 1945 graduate of the University of Kansas, where she was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta womens fraternity. She was married to Elliott Johnson for 63 years and lived in Hobbs since 1947. During that time, she was a charter member of the Hobbs Junior Service League and the Hobbs Literary Club. She was also active in Hobbs Panhellenic and the Hobbs Greater Garden Club. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, Virginia served as an Elder and a Deacon. Her legacy as a selfless wife, parent, and friend and as a gracious hostess will always be remembered.
Of utmost importance to Virginia was her family. Survivors include loving and devoted daughters Margaret Carpenter and husband Les of Sumter, South Carolina, Mary Draper and husband Lloyd of Richardson, Texas, and Marcia Schubert and husband Gary of Hobbs, and also niece Caroline Wake and husband John and family of Shawnee, Kansas. Of great joy to her were grandchildren Lance Carpenter and wife Mary, Sally Carpenter, Stephen Draper and wife Ann, Scott Draper, Lindsay Faulkner and husband Jonathan, Amy Donahue and husband Ben, Clay Schubert, and Emily Schubert. She was the proud great grandmother of Maggie, Zachary, and Evey Carpenter, Will Draper, and Atlee Faulkner.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Elliott Johnson, parents Kenneth and Irene Kline, and brothers Jack and Winwood Kline.
