Vernie Jane Hester,known to her family and friends as Jane Hester, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Lovington Good Samaritan. She was 89 years old. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Mack McCarthick officiating. Interment will be after services at Lovington Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Stevens Funeral Home from 2 7 p.m.
She was born on February 25, to Henry Baker and Vernie Spears Baker and grew up in the Midway Community northeast of Lovington. She attended school at Prairieview. She moved to Hobbs where she met and married Ted Hester, a returning WWII veteran. They eloped to Clovis and were married on Friday the 13th, September, 1946. They were married for 46 years. They returned to Lovington where they made their home. Together they owned and operated Teds Repair and Steel Supply where she loaded and cut steel for most of the welders and construction workers of Lea County. Later they had Teds Mobile Home Moving. Ted sometimes said, I tell her what to do, and she tells me where to go. She was a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where she served faithfully.
After they retired, they enjoyed their grandkids and going camping with their good friends Jerry Lillian Cook. Ted and Jane went to many reunions of his unit from WWII 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Jane claimed many of Teds buddies and their wives as extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Hester 4 sisters, Hazel Ruth Baker, Geraldine Baker, Bonnie Goodman and Mary Katherine Collum, and soninlaw, Spencer Dixon.
She is survived by her daughter, Wilda Dixon of the home her son Carl and his wife Susan of Lovington two grandchildren, Kristen Hester of Lubbock, TX, and Christopher Hester of Abilene, TX one sister, Jimmie Steele of Denver City, TX and one brother, Joe Baker of Visalia, CA sisterinlaw, Carol Spann of Amarillo, TX and a host of nieces and nephews.
