alignjustifyTrenedy Schavez Grovey; 53, was born January 1, 1956, in Duncan, Oklahoma. He died May 2, 2009, in Denver City, Texas. He was the oldest of four sons born to Robert and Bobbye Grovey.

alignjustifyTrent spent most of his childhood in Duncan, Oklahoma, where he was well known for his leadership and athletic abilities. Excelling in football, basketball and track, Trent was a state champion in the hurdles and member of all-district football and basketball teams.

alignjustifyAfter high school, Trent attended Oklahoma State University majoring in Petroleum Engineering, Trent played only one year of college basketball because he refused to change to an easier major. While attending OSU, Trenedy was president of his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and the Society of Black Engineers, Technologists and Architects. Throughout college, Jab, as he was affectionately called by his college friends, was the lead singer in his bad, Inner Peace. At OSU he met and married Patricia, who was his wife for 25 years. Their union produced two beautiful children, Brittany, a first year medical student, and Ryan, a sophomore in college.

alignjustifyUpon graduation from college, Trenedy moved to Hobbs and had a career as a Petroleum Engineer and became an active member in the community. He was a board member of the Rotary Club and a member of the N.A.A.C.P. Society of Petroleum Engineers and a governor-appointed commissioner of the NM Commission on the Status of Women. Additional accomplishments included attending the Million Man March; organizing a petition drive and canvassing the city to bring the BET network to Hobbs; co-founder of BMI, an investment group for African-American men; and he had a leading role in the CSW stage production of Dream Girls.

alignjustifyTrent had a strong commitment to working with the youth of his community. He began a Youth Development Club for teenage boys and partnered with the public schools in providing tutoring services for at-risk youth. He was chosen the Man of the Year by the Lovely Ladies Federated Art Club and received a similar honor from the N.A.A.C.P. He was also a keynote and motivational speaker at local and state branches of the N.A.A.C.P. community meetings and civic organizations.

alignjustifyIn recent years, Trenedy relocated to Denver City where he continued to work as a Petroleum Engineer. There he developed and cultivated an enduring, loving relationship with Elaine Fairfax and her family.

alignjustifyTrenedy was a visionary dreamer and a man of strong spiritual faith, tenacity and fortitude. He was a member of Scharbauer Street Church of Christ of Hobbs and attended New Jerusalem Church of Denver City.

alignjustifyTrenedy was preceded in death by his father, Robert Grovey. He leaves to cherish his memory, one daughter, Brittany of San Francisco, California; one son, Ryan of Hobbs; his mother, Bobbye Grovey of Duncan, Oklahoma; three brothers, Donnie Denise of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Reggie Leslie of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Quinn Stacy of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and a host of other relatives and numerous friends.

alignjustifyFuneral services will be held at Scharbauer Street Church of Christ 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

alignjustifyVisitation is at Don Grantham Funeral Home Friday, May 8, 2009. Graveside services will be Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Henderson-Harris Cemetery in Duncan, Oklahoma.
