Sidney Charles Nichols of Owasso, Oklahoma passed away on March 14, 2025, to join his beloved wife Donna in heaven. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Sid was born on November 8, 1936, in Hobbs, NM to R.D. and Bertha Nichols. His family moved around Texas for several years before settling back in Hobbs in the late 1940's. They joined First Baptist Church where he eventually met the love of his life, Donna Vandagriff.
He is survived by his children Mike Nichols of Frisco, Texas, Lisa Nichols of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Cory (Joni) Nichols of Skiatook, Oklahoma; grandchildren Jacob Holler of Phoenix, Arizona, Tyler (Jack) Foley of Bixby, Oklahoma, and Kenzie Nichols of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and his brother Jim Nichols of Sundown, Texas. Sid was proceeded in death by his wife Donna Nichols, parents R.D. and Bertha Nichols, along with many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Sid began his career in the oilfield with Cities Services (Oxy) as a teenager before attending college at Texas Tech University. After his marriage to Donna in 1957 he continued working for Oxy for 40+ years before retiring as production manager. He was well respected in the oilfield industry by the men and women he worked with.
In the early 1970's, Sid discovered a need for a girls' softball field in Hobbs. Along with Gary Shephard he initiated, planned, and built the Nichols Shephard Softball Field. With the help of the City of Hobbs, and business donations, Nichols Shephard Softball Field is still being used by softball participants today.
Sid was an avid hunter and fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed passing his enthusiasm down to his sons and grandson. After he retired, he enjoyed spending his time in taxidermy and woodworking, and passed his knowledge to his daughter and grandson.
As a long-standing member of First Baptist Church in Hobbs he was actively engaged in the youth of the church by teaching and by chaperoning many trips. The young people he engaged with still recount stories of his humor and antics. Sid and Donna's house became the go-to place for after church gatherings for the youth groups where he actively engaged in the fun.
In 2022 Sid and his daughter moved to Owasso, Oklahoma to be closer to family. He spent the last 2 years of his life in Memory Care where he was known as "The gentleman of the house" by his caregivers. His family was with him every day, and our sincere appreciation goes out to the wonderful and caring staff of Oxford Glen Memory Care of Owasso, Oklahoma.
