Shirley Louise Baird-wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend-woke up in the arms of her Savior on Monday, March 20, 2017.
Shirley was born on July 12, 1933, in Dodson, Texas, to Johnny Harden and Opal Marie Richie Baird. She married Leroy Ayers on August 5, 1950, in Hollis Oklahoma. They shared 66 ½ years together.
Shirley and Leroy moved to Hobbs in March of 1958 and opened the first Village Meat Market on North Jefferson Street. Apart from working with her husband in the meat market, Shirley was a Cub Scout leader. An active member of the Church of the Nazarene, Shirley taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She and Leroy were youth pastors at the church for ten years, at one time having a group of sixty-five teenagers. They pastored South Lea Church of the Nazarene in Roswell for two years. Shirley was active with the Gideon's for fifty-five years.
In her spare time, while raising four children, she enjoyed collecting family pictures and attending family reunions. Family was very important to her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Donna Louise, brother Vernon Baird, and sisters Verna Mae Underwood, Johnnie Lou Branch, and Sara Worley.
Left to cherish her memory are husband Leroy of the home and sons Tommy (Debbie) and John (Dolores) of Hobbs and daughter Jeannie (Mike) McAndrew of Midland, Texas. Also, surviving her are her grandchildren: Phillip (Michelle) of Van Buren, Arkansas, Kristi (Eddie) Collins and Kaci Ayers of Albuquerque, Ethan and Zane Ayers of Hobbs, Jay McAndrew of Lubbock, and Jaxon McAndrew of Midland. Great-great grandchildren are Tracie, Alton, McKenna, and Presley. She will also be missed by many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
