Sarah Ellen Burns of Hobbs, New Mexico ' 1931-2023 '
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sarah Ellen Burns, peacefully passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the age of 92 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 73 years, George Burns; children: Kay Culp (Crawford) and Ranae Burns; grandchildren: Tracy Brey and Michelle Weinstein (Eric); great-grandchildren: Zach Brey, Riley Weinstein, and William Weinstein; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ellen was born in Childress County, Texas, in 1931. She was the eighth of nine children born to Henry and Doshia O'Daniel. She was the longest-living member of her sibling group, which included Mildred, Thelma, Buster, Lyle, George, Sue, Billy, and her younger sister and best friend, Juanita. In 1950, she and George Burns married and, within several years, moved their young family to Oil Center, NM, later moving to Eunice, NM. Ellen worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for C.R. Anthony's in Eunice for 23 years. After retiring, she and George moved to Hobbs, NM in 1990. She was a faithful member of Crosswinds Community Church and cherished her church family. Ellen loved craft projects and enjoyed crocheting, making jewelry, and creating one-of-a-kind wreaths and other decorative items. She played cards and dominoes with friends and was winning as recently as a few weeks ago. Most of all, Ellen loved taking care of her family and friends. Her grandchildren, especially, were doted on and adored. Her home-cooked meals, candy, and pies brought joy and comfort to all who enjoyed them. She was known by everyone for her warmth, kindness, humor, and loving nature. She created a home where everyone was welcomed and loved. There are so many memories and stories from her long life, but most of all, she'll be remembered for the love she extended to those around her. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her in return.
The family wishes to thank the many friends and neighbors who have offered extra care and support over the past several years. A special thank you to Maria Escobedo, Pat Thompson, Mary Jo Varner, and the Needham family: Corey, Robin, Colin, and Landon - you were each dearly loved by her.
Arrangements are with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home, Hobbs, NM. Condolences may be made at www.chapelofhopefunerals.com.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
