Sanford Whitehead

July 6, 1941 — April 30, 2015

Sanford Whitehead passed away on April 30, 2015 at the age
of 73 after a short battle with cancer. He was born July 6, 1941 in Dublin, Texas to Melvin and Sybil Whitehead. He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1959. He served in the United States Army from February 1964 beginning in Fort Polk, Louisiana and completing his service in Fort Hood, Texas in February 1966. Sanford worked for Tooties Super Market and Foodway for 18 years before he went to work for Phillips Petroleum. He worked in Mechanical Maintenance until he retired in 2002.

He married Cheryl Mayes in 1968 and they had 47 wonderful years together. His greatest joy were his grandchildren. He was always building bicycles, bird houses, roadrunners or anything creative in the backyard with them, in addition to helping them with school projects. Every year he had a new plan for his garden. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Sanford loved the outdoors whether it was hunting or camping with his friends or grand-kids. He will always be remembered as a loving father and PaPa and a loyal friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Sybil Whitehead and one brother Dwain Whitehead.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory and celebrate his life: his wife Cheryl of Hobbs; his son Wade and wife LeAnn of Hobbs; his daughters Teresa and husband Tommy Bullock of Seminole; and Cynthia and husband Jim Hawley of Hobbs; and six grandchildren; Jadelyn Bates and husband Josh; Morgan and Logan Whitehead; Brody Bullock; Cooper and Cayson Hawley; and one great grandson Blaze Bates. Three brothers; Bill and Ronnie Whitehead of Hobbs, David Whitehead of Winnsboro, LA and one sister Jeri and husband Ralph of Blackfoot, Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews.
