Rose Marie Hall was born Nov 21, 1916 in Memphis, TN to Sam A. Hall and Ella Maher. She and her brothers, Sam Jr. and Charles, worked the family farm with their parents to support themselves. During the Great Depression the Halls shared the food they had produced, mostly yams, to people needing food.
Rose attended Memphis State University and earned a degree education. She taught school in Memphis and worked as a bank teller in the summers, where she met William Edward Sloman II whom she married 1944 and became Rose Sloman. Ed was a sergeant in the army stationed in the Aleutian Islands near the end of WWII.
They made their home in Hobbs where Rose taught first grade at Will Rogers Elementary where she worked for several decades. She returned to Memphis to earn a Masters' degree in elementary education in the ‘70's. She resumed teaching in Hobbs at the 4th grade level and continued teaching until she retired with a 40 year tenure. She taught and encouraged hundreds of students during her career. Eventually she taught some of her students' children. Teaching was one of her great passions in life.
Ed worked for D&E as an electrical engineer in nearby the oil fields. Rose and Ed had two children: Marilyn, and William Edward III. He enjoyed his work but was forced into early retirement due to coronary heart disease. Unfortunately he succumbed in 1961.
After her husband's death Rose served as Mother and "Father" to their children. She continued to teach to support her family and provide a variety of family life experiences for them. She was a generous person but knew the value of saving money. She managed to send both children through college on her salary which offered them professional positions in the community.
After her retirement from Hobbs Public Schools Rose ventured into many new roles, mostly as a volunteer. She served her church, St. Christopher Episcopal Church; her community in several civic organizations (Salvation Army where she earned an outstanding volunteer award, The Women's Civic Club, fundraisers for charitable organizations, and many more). She also took time from her busy life to culture her "famous" vegetable garden yearly, and to participate in cultural activities - ceramics, Bridge, club officers to Retired Teachers' group, etc. She was always willing to help in any capacity.
Rose had a happy life, a good life, a full life. She left this life on April 25, 2016 at the age of 99. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and husband David, her son Edward and wife Christina, and Edward's daughter Adrianne and her husband Mark. She will be remembered by the people whose lives she touched.
