Roger D. Johnson

March 24, 1945 — January 28, 2025

Hobbs

Roger Dale Johnson was born March 24, 1945, in Seminole, Texas. He had a normal childhood that many have only wished for with a mother and father and four brothers. He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1964, was declared the Best Date, and went on to work various jobs in his younger years. He was a charmer when he met Judy Landusky. They dated for about a year and then eloped in 1983. To this bond no children were born, so it was just the two of them going through life together.

You probably never met Roger, since he was a very private man, a recluse, a hermit. Nothing made him happier than to drive the back roads of Lea County, alone. You need to understand that this came from being a peace officer, not a “cop”, with the Hobbs Police Department and then the Lea County Sheriff Department. He was always alone on those drives and he loved it. He also worked for Getty and Texaco in the gas plants of New Mexico and Oklahoma and then as a landman who helped with the transition from Texaco to Chevron. Judy was honored to be along for the ride.

He didn't have too many folks he called friends, but if you were one of the lucky ones, you knew it and he was a friend for life. He was a helper, a fixer, a man that would help someone in need, whether you were on the side of the road or across the street. He was a godly man, always reading and studying the Bible. He was both a learner and a teacher. He learned computers and software while with Texaco and then taught Judy what he knew. He taught her all about hand tools and what each one was used for. He was a woodcarver leaving Judy and friends his masterpieces. He was a landscaper who took pride in his backyard and an artist who left paintings on their back fence.

To meet him on the street, you probably would have never taken notice. But to be with him for over 41 years was a delight. He was a faithful and loving husband who took care of Judy, in sickness and in health, through the good times and the bad times. He gave graciously of his time, to be with you and to listen to you.

Judy wishes more people could have known him. He lived for almost 80 years in a simple life. You would have liked him. He passed away on January 28, 2025. He knew he wouldn't see another Christmas. He knew he had taught Judy everything he could. His work on earth was done.

He was the last of his clan. He is survived by Judy, his wife of over 41 years. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Christian Leech, his father, William Sidney Johnson II, and his four brothers, William Sidney III, Leonard Ross, Steven Coy, and Harvey Lee.

He was a good and kind soul. God gained an angel that day. Judy and each of his friends are going to miss him.
