Robert Vanmeter

July 28, 1926 — July 16, 2010

A funeral service for Robert Dean VanMeter, 83, of Hobbs will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2010, at Taylor Memorial Baptist Chuirch. Pastor Dale Shook will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 5 p.m. Sunday at Chapel of Hope. The family will be in attendance at that time.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mr. VanMeter died July 16, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born July 28, 1926, in Three Forks, Montana. He married Wilma June Cooper on October 9, 1954, in Albuquerque.

Bob was born in Three Forks, Montana, and was raised in Puyallup, Wahsington. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school graduation and was a WWII veteran. Bob moved to Albuquerque, where he fell in love and married Wilma. They moved to Hobbs in 1967. Bob was a devout Christian and longtime member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church and served as Sunday school teacher, youth director, and served on the bus and homebound ministries. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, loved Hobbs Eagle basketball and spending time with friends and family. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

He was a member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife, Wilma VanMeter of Hobbs two daughters, Val Lee and husband Bruce of Spring, Texas, and Kellie Smith and husband Kevin of Dripping Springs, Texas grandchildren, Nicholas Lee of Nellis AFB, Nevada, Angela Brown of Spring, Texas, Lydia Lee of College Station, Texas, Caleb Lee of Spring, Texas and Kourtney Smith of Dripping Springs, Texas greatgrandchild Sophie Lee of Nellis AFB, Nevada three sisters, Joan Yazzolino of Federal Way, Washington, Bunny Grey of Port Orchard, Washington and Charlene VanMeter of Polson, Montana, and countless nieces and nephews.

Mr. VanMeter was preceded in death by his parents, Dale Leighton and Madelyn Jane VanMeter a brother, Bill VanMeter and two sisters, Jean Shuck and Donna Knudson.
