Rebecca Jeanette Welty, 89, of Hobbs, New Mexico, died September 21, 2010, at Lea County Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Friday September 24, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Chapel of Hope. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 23rd from 3 7 p.m. at Chapel of Hope which is in charge of arrangements.
Dot, as she was affectionately known, was born July 31, 1921, in Masten Corners, Delaware. Her parents were William and Virginia Brown.
Dot married R. C. Runt Welty December 2, 1939, in Hobbs. They were married 63 years. They have three sons: Rodney Welty and wife Connie of Albuquerque, Randall Welty and wife Shirley of Hobbs and Rubert Wayne Welty and wife Koenia of Rogers, Arkansas. They have seven grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and three greatgreatgrandchildren.
R C and Rebecca owned and operated Runt and Dots Cafe located at 401 E Marland. The first cafe was built and opened for business in 1947. The second and larger cafe opened in 1956. Prior to that, in 1939, they opened the Coney Island located on Broadway and the City Cafe in 1946.
Dot held many positions and received many honors including 1991 Woman of the Year of the Business and Professional Womens Association. She also served as president. She was also president of the Altrusa, Nobel Grand, and held all offices of the Rebecca Lodge. She was State Secretary for two terms of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, president, director and founder of the Flatland Preservation Club. She also was president of the Sportsmen Club. She was state president, secretary, treasurer and national chaplain of the Does.
She is preceded in death by her husband, R. C. her parents her sisters, Irene Wyatt, Thelma Outten, Williamina Lewis, Bernice Hurt and one brother, Walter Brown. Geraldine Solovic, her granddaughter, also preceded her in death.
