Raymond "Stoney" F. Stone passed away on February 24, 2015 at his home. He was born June 19, 1930
in Pampa, Texas to Early R Stone and Melissa Bradford Stone. Raymond was one of 12 children
and was raised by his sister Dorris who had 5 children of her own. He was just another one of
her kids. He attended high school in Adrian, Texas, where he played on the first basketball team
that beat the rival team of Vega High. He graduated in 1948.
After graduation he went to work for a neighbor Ray Brown and moved to Uffalla, Oklahoma.
He met Davida Walls, who he later married. After Mr. Brown sold the ranch Raymond returned
to live with the Pinnells who purchased a ranch in St. Vrain, NM. He and Donald Pinnell moved
to the ranch in 1954.
In 1955 he went to work for his brother John as an oil field driller. More Money! He later went
into the oil field salvage business where he worked hard and became very successful. He told
the bank "I don't buy CD's. I buy junk."
Raymond was a cowboy at heart and loved to rodeo. He was a calf roper and bull dogger in the
RCA. In 1985 he roped in the RCA senior steer roping and was named "Rookie of the
Year". Raymond loved to work with cattle and he never strayed away from working with them.
He still had 15 head when he passed away.
Raymond will be remembered as a good man who never met a stranger. He loved being around
people and is known for helping others. One time he was visiting with his mother and dad when
a neighbor's child fell into a cesspool, Raymond jumped in and got him and held on until help
arrived. His fingers were cramping severely, but he never let go.
If it hadn't been for Raymond his nephew, Eldon, would have lost his hand. They were roofing
his parents house when Eldon lost control of a skill saw and nearly cut his hand off. Raymond
put his hands on the cut and held on tight. Doctors were able to save Eldon's hand, but his
fingers were badly damaged.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents Early R Stone and Melissa Bradford Stone.
