Raoul Lee McPeters, 69, left his earthly bounds on Saturday, April 7th, at his home following a
brief illness. Raoul was born in Hobbs, NM, on February 24, 1949, to Kenneth and Deron
(Bigham) McPeters.
Raoul grew up in Hobbs, graduating in 1968 from Hobbs High School where he was
active in A Capella choir, track, and FFA. It was at Hobbs High that Raoul met the love of his
life, Sandra Fleming. In August 1969, Raoul and Sandra were married in Hobbs.
Raoul joined the Air Force in March 1970 and was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, where he
served as a fire protection specialist. During his time there, Raoul earned law degree through
college courses made available through the Air Force.
Following discharge from active duty he returned to Hobbs where he worked for Baroid
as a mud engineer until he joined the Hobbs Police Department in 1973. During his time at
Hobbs PD Raoul served as a patrol officer, motor officer, SWAT team member, detective and
crime scene investigator until his retirement in May 1992.
Following retirement Raoul worked as bailiff at Hobbs Municipal Court, transport officer
for Lea County Sheriff's Dept., investigator for Wackenhut Corrections in Hobbs, and ended his
active career as a background investigator for Hobbs Police Dept., where his career began.
Raoul joined Knowles Fire Dept. in 1991 and was subsequently elected Assistant Fire
Chief, a position he held until his death.
Raoul was a 40+ year member of Fraternal Order of Police, Lea County Lodge #9. He
served many years as State Trustee, representing the local lodge on the state level.
Raoul was active for many years in Boy Scouts as a leader of Troop 97 in Hobbs, where
he enjoyed very much working with youth.
Raoul was preceded in death by his mother, a sister, Rhonda (McPeters) Valdez, an
uncle and aunt, Bob and Wanda McPeters, and his mother-in-law, Dimples Looney.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of the home, his dad, Kenneth McPeters of Hobbs,
their son Kenny (Kana) McPeters of San Diego, CA, Toby (Robin) Flores of Las Cruces and
their 3 sons, Scotty, Austin, and Kendrick, and adopted grandchildren Jessica and
Kenyon Singleton of Hobbs.
