Preston Cox, 81, died August 19, 2011, at his home in Hobbs surrounded by his family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Preston was born April 20, 1930, in Lamesa, Texas, to John and Dora Cox. Cremation will take place. Chapel of Hope is in charge of arrangements.
Previous employers during Prestons 58 years in Hobbs include WM Billy Walker 30 years, Lea County Road Department and Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. He loved listening to music and playing fiddle and guitar. He enjoyed teaching his soninlaw, Jerry, how to play the guitar. Preston played at numerous jamborees and gatherings in Hobbs and surrounding cities and also played for many Cox family reunions in Texas. Mr. Cox enjoyed reading and exchanging books with his daughters, especially westernthemed novels. He also loved camping and fishing with his family and friends.
Preston shared a love of sports with his daughters and although he didnt have any sons, he coached Little League baseball for many years in Hobbs. His daughters remember him carting carloads of kids to outoftown games, and he loved every minute of it. They also remember the time their Daddy ran all the way up Broadway carrying a very heavy 8 mm camera while he filmed his cheerleading daughter in a parade.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carlene daughters, Sharon Colwell and husband Jerry W. of San Antonio, TX, and RebeccaBecky Cox of Hobbs grandsons, Michael W. Colwell and wife Chrysta of San Antonio, James A. Johnson of Hobbs, and Mark S. Colwell and wife Shanna of San Antonio and greatgrandchildren, Kaylea Colwell, Camron Colwell, Owen Colwell and Charley Colwell, all of San Antonio brotherinlaw, J. B. Ratliff, Jr. and wife Beni and sistersinlaw, Dovie Hunt and husband Kenneth, and Theresa Pankey and husband Charles along with numerous nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends. Prestons special friends include Bob Matthews, Johnie and Billie Smith, Eddie Feller and Christie Brown, and James Bird and Tina Funderburk, Lindy and Pat Durham, Patricia Westbrook, and Judy and Jim Sealy.
Preston is preceded in death by grandson, Charles Preston Johnson his parents and 7 brothers and 2 sisters.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes could make a donation to Star Hospice, 1601 N. Turner St., Suite 520, Hobbs, NM 88240 or the charity of choice.
Preston Cox was loved by many and will be forgotten by none
