Nora Berry

April 1, 1928 — December 25, 2017

Nora M. Berry, age 89, of Hobbs, NM, passed away at 8:22 PM on Sunday, December 25, 2017 in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Mary was the descendant of Acadian immigrants that settled in South Louisiana in the mid to late 1700's. She was born April 1, 1928 in New Iberia, Louisiana. Mary only spoke "Cajun French" when she started to school at the age of six and was very proud of her Cajun heritage. With the help of her children, she was able to trace her family tree back to 15th century France.

Mary met and married her husband J. D. Berry, Jr. in Port Arthur, TX and moved to Hobbs in 1947 during the "Oil Boom". Since J. D. worked in the oil fields, the family moved to where the work was and eventually lived in numerous towns in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. But the family did permanently settle in Hobbs in the mid 1950's.

Mary was christened in the Catholic Church as a baby and later baptized in the Northside Baptist Church of Hobbs. Her greatest accomplishments were raising her three children and leading both her husband and her three children to the Christian faith.

She is survived by her son, Wiley Berry (Janice) of Dallas TX, her daughter, Annette Vaught (Olin Sr.) of Hobbs, a grandson, Olin Vaught Jr. of Hobbs, two granddaughters, Rene' Martin (Jerry) of Hobbs and Shay Berry Campbell (Keith) of Arvada CO, two great grand-daughters, Chelsey Harris (Justin) and Bailey Martin of Hobbs, one great great-granddaughter, Madison Harris of Hobbs and her brother, Leonard Sonnier (Margaret) of Port Arthur TX,

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Berry, Jr., her son, J. D. Berry III, daughter-in-law, Jan Berry, her parents and her two sisters.

There will be no funeral services.
