One of seven children born to Lee and Essie Owens. Noma Lee Rather was born February 6th, 1933 in Roswell, NM. Her proud parents instilled the values, character, and charitable heart that she was known for. After moving to Hobbs she met and married James A. Rather December 2nd , 1950. They shared 55 years together until his passing on October 31st, 2005. Noma was an accomplished bowler and made several trips to tournaments all over the United States. She was also an avid fan of the Hobbs Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys but some of her favorite memories were taking her grandsons all over the country to play soccer, or watching her granddaughters dance recitals. Noma was known for her charitable work as a former president of the Ladies Eagle Auxiliary and the Pink Ladies. She enjoyed making flower arrangements, decorating for weddings, or baking cakes for any occasion or charity event. During her spare time Noma was employed by General Telephone Company for 37 years. She started as a switch board operator and retired as an equipment installer.
Noma was proceeded in death by: her husband, her parents, Brother Earl Owens of Hobbs, Sisters Dorothy Neel of Fort Worth, TX , Gladys Ramsey of Carlsbad, NM, Lou Ella Heinz of Maricopa, CA, Grandson Jason Barber of Hobbs, and Great Granddaughter Trista Barber of Hobbs, Niece Pam Grandjean, and Nephew Roy Lee Ramsey both of Carlsbad, NM.
She is survived by daughter LouAnn Davis and husband Dean Davis of Hobbs, Son Jimmy Rather and Brandy Reid of Hobbs, Two Brothers James Owens and his wife Karen Owens of Hobbs, Jimmy Owens and his wife Frieda Owens of Lovington, NM, Sisternlaw Polly Owens of Hobbs, Granddaughters Kristi Shoemake and husband Tracy Shoemake of Hobbs, Taylor Rather of Hobbs, Chelsea Labouff and husband Jordan of Hamtden Maine, and Grandson Brandyn Barber and wife Trish of Hobbs. 10 Great Grandchildren Kalea Shoemake, Kenzie Shoemake, Jadyn Shoemake, Erin McAdams, Bree Barber, Danny McAtee Jr., Jordan McAtee, Tamryn Barber, Tayven Barber, 2 Great Great grandchildren Alex and Nathanial McAdams, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 am, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Chapel of Hope. Family will greet friends, Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at Chapel of Hope.
