Mary Selman, 86, slipped into the arms of her loving Lord on October 31, 2013. She was born on November 9,1926, in Frost, Texas to proud parents James Hubert and Mary Jewel Hester Gober.
Her family, who were farmers, moved to Needmore, Texas when Mary was two years old. The family later moved to Meadow, Texas where Mary graduated from Meadow High School. She later graduated from Draughons Business College in Lubbock, Texas.
After graduation, Mary went to work at J. C. Rigney Auto Parts as office manager in Lubbock where she met and married James A. Bunk Selman on December 24,1950. The couple had three childrenPat, Mary Jo, and Jim.
They moved to Lovington, New Mexico in 1951 where they owned and operated J. I. Case Implement Co. They later sold the business and began farming and ranching. In 1960, she and Bunk left Lovington and moved to Hobbs and started Bunks Feed Barn where Mary served as bookkeeper and office manager. The company is currently owned and operated by her son and daughterinlaw.
In February of 1975, Mary went to work for First National Bank of Lea County as a bank supervisor. She was later promoted to Accounts Service Officer. Even though the bank went through several transitions and name changes, Mary remained loyal to the bank and retired after seventeen years of service. Mary later returned to the work force as bookkeeper for Martin Boot Co. She retired from there in 2000.
Mary was a gifted and skilled worker. She was a member of Church At Hobbs. Her talents included ABWA member, 4H leader, homemaker, business woman, and financial adviser. Her hobbies included quilting, reading especially the Bible, crocheting, and yard work with a special love for pulling weeds. She loved every kind of animal, but she was especially fond of dogs. Half Pint was her favorite grand dog.
Aside from her love for God, Marys greatest joy in life came with the birth of her granddaughter Ashley. The second greatest joy came when Ashley moved to Hobbs from Albuquerque at the age of three.
Preceding her in death were Marys parents, sister Juanita Brown, sisterinlaw Josephine Sharp, and brothersinlaw Scout Sharp and Charles Scarborough.
Survivors include daughter Pat Selman, daughter Mary Jo Pete Turner, son Jim Susie Selman, and granddaughter Ashley Selman, all of Hobbs. She is also survived by twin brothers Ray Jeanadopted sister Sober of Meadow, Texas, and Roy Margaret Sober of Brownf ield, Texas. Also surviving Mary are her brotherinlaw and sisterinlaw J. V. and Berline Selman of Amarillo, Texas and sisterinlaw adopted sister Frances Scarborough of Lubbock, Texas. Mary also leaves behind numerous close friends, nephews, and a niece to cherish her memory.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Leonard Wagner and staff, Gentiva Hospice, and the staff and residents of Good Life for the loving care of their beloved mother and grandmother. Special thanks go to Marshall and Lynda Newman, Beth Lynch, Ethan Ayers, and Pastors John and Dolores Ayers.
A celebration of Marys life will be held at Chapel of Hope in Hobbs at 3:00 MST on Tuesday, November 5th with Pastors John and Dolores Ayers and Bill Hicks officiating. Interment will take place on Wednesday, November 6th at 2:00 CST at the Meadow Cemetery in Meadow, Texas.
