Mark Nichols, 44, was born August 19, 1969 to Mark Vernau and Donna in
Decatur, Illinois. He passed away August 10, 2014 in Hobbs, New Mexico.
After attending Hobbs schools, Mark joined the U.S. Navy, serving in Japan
and the Pacific. Following the Navy, he remained in Japan, teaching English
for several years. In 1997 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served
worldwide, including Korea and Germany. He was heavily decorated for his
service in Iraq. Mark was a gifted linguist, who spoke multiple languages.
He returned to Hobbs in 2010, married Karen Richards and became a father,
which he viewed as his most important role. Mark was extremely generous
with his time and resources, and was always involved with helping others.
Mark is survived by his wife Karen, and children Kayla and Parker, of Hobbs
his parents Mike and Donna Nichols, also of Hobbs sisters, Jeanne Johnson and
husband Lonnie of Wylie, Texas, Jan Easterling and husband Ron of Carlsbad,
New Mexico, Jo Carmen and husband Stan of Garland, Texas, and sister
Jil DiRenzo and husband Anthony of Westminster, Colorado and numerous
nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday August 16, 2014, at First
Presbyterian Church, 920 N. Turner, Hobbs, New Mexico, officiated by Pastor
Harold Armstrong.
