Lugene Howry

Lugene Parker Howry, 87, died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at her home north of Hobbs.
The daughter of Walter and Emma Lawrence, Lugene was born and raised in Lamesa, Texas. At the age of 19, she graduated from Sul Ross State College in Alpine, Texas with a degree in Speech and English. Still a teenager herself, she taught high school Speech and English in Eunice before meeting the love of her life, Dean Parker. The couple married in 1946 and began farming north of Hobbs. Lugene continued her teaching career in Hobbs, teaching third grade at North Hobbs Elementary School. She was one of the first instructors at New Mexico Baptist College which is now University of the Southwest, teaching Speech and Drama. In 1963, she took a position at Hobbs High School teaching English and History.
Lugene was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and served as church treasurer for many years. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Triangle Extension Club, New Mexico Cactus Cow Belles, and the Llano Estacado Art Association. Lugene was a gifted artist, winning many honors and awards for her paintings throughout Eastern New Mexico and West Texas.
After losing her first husband to cancer, Lugene married Nathan Howry in 1981. The couple enjoyed 21 years together before Nathan passed away in 2003.
Lugene is survived by her three children, Larry Parker, Ron Parker, and Cheryl Parker three grandchildren, Jessica Banville, Rebecca Parker, and Hayden Parker and three greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Mary Lee Norris and Ruth Fingado.
Visitation will be held today from 11AM to 6PM at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 20th at 1PM at Bethel Baptist Church north of Hobbs, followed by a burial service at Prairie Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory to be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
