LaVerne Chaffin was born on January 31, 1938 in Pecos, Texas to Doyle and Lorene Breedlove. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 14, 2017 in Eunice, New Mexico.
LaVerne spent her early years in Monahans, Crane and Wimberly, Texas before her family settled in San Marcos, Texas where she attended school through her sophomore year. She and her parents moved to Eunice in 1954 and she graduated from Eunice High School in 1956. She was always a proud Eunice Cardinal and an avid spectator of Eunice Cardinal Sports.
In 1960, LaVerne graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in education. She began teaching in Roswell, New Mexico that same year. It was also in Roswell that she met her future husband, Bud Chaffin. She and Bud were married in 1961 in Eunice. They welcomed their daughter, Jill in 1962. Following Bud's time in the Air Force, LaVerne and her family lived in Burleson, Texas and a brief time in California before finally settling in Eunice in 1974. In 1977, they welcomed a son, Matt. LaVerne's husband, Bud preceded her in death in 1989.
LaVerne was an educator for thirty-eight years, twenty-six of those years teaching at Mettie Jordan Elementary in Eunice. After her retirement, she was involved in many community and church activities. She served on the Eunice Chamber of Commerce board. She was active with the Eunice High School Alumni Association serving at one time as their treasurer. LaVerne was a member of the Jubilee Choir as well as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Eunice, volunteering in many capacities.
LaVerne was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. "Moms" or "Momsie", as she was affectionately known, is survived by her daughter, Jill Hodges of Eunice. Her son, Matt Chaffin also of Eunice. Three grandchildren: Cari (Matt Ray) Coy of Eunice, Casey (Triston) Sikes of Eunice and Cody (Jessica) Hodges of Eunice. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Tanner Coy, Tyson Coy and Ellie Sikes all of Eunice. She is also survived by one sister, Doylene Robinson of Platte City, Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and her husband Bud.
