Jose Bruno Mendez, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home, May 4, 2016. He was born in Guanajuato, MX to Pedro and Josefa Mendez. The family migrated to the US when his father obtained employment with the railroad, traveling in a boxcar and seeing the US. The family eventually settled in Eunice, NM working for Mr. Hill and the farmers in the area. He was proud to be recognized as the oldest living alumni who attended Eunice Public Schools. He joined the Armed Guard (Navy) in 1943 serving in the South Pacific during WWII as a radio operator. Jose married Herlinda Rosales in 1951. They moved to Las Cruces, NM where he worked in construction and as a salesman at Whites Auto. He brought his family back to Hobbs and worked in the oilfield the majority of his life. Jose became a proud US citizen in 1977. He also served as a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and was a faithful member of St. Helena's Catholic Church.
Together Jose and Herlinda had four children; Joe Albert, Gloria (Anthony) Sam (Sheryl) and Sylvia. He was the proud grandfather of Kristen, Kyle and Kellen Dickey; also Andrew, Victoria, Matthew and Paul Ostic; and Brandon Mendez, two great-grandchildren, Abigail Ostic and Caleb Kenneth Mendez.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents Pedro and Josefa Mendez, his sisters; Dolores Lopez, Guadalupe Deleon, Andrea Lopez, Trinidad Chavez and Refugia Galindo.
He is survived by his wife Herlinda of 64 years and his sisters; Clara Childers and Ramona (Gary) Sloan and numerous nieces and nephews.
