John Wayne Prather, 69, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2013, surrounded by his family after a particularly vicious and hard fought battle with cancer.
Memorial Service for longtime Hobbs resident John Wayne Prather is slated for Monday, January 20, 2014 2 pm at TexMex Rentals and Service, LLC, 2604 West County Road in Hobbs. The family encourages that hardhats be worn to the service in honor of Johns neverending dedication to employee safety. Hats worn with company logos are welcome as well. Services will be officiated by Pastor David Matkins of Hobbs. The family would like to thank Ron Todd for facilitating this service.
John Wayne Prather was born on September 6, 1944 to Raymond Marcellas and Suella McCallie Prather in Dumas, Texas. He spent most of his adult life in the oilfield industry. Whether it was with Kerr McGee, who he retired with after 10 years, ConocoPhillips who he also retired with after 10 years, John was a dedicated and knowledgeable man. He had been encouraged to step out on his own and became an independent business owner for Safety Consulting and Training where he remained for seven years, all in Hobbs, New Mexico. John assisted numerous clients in a myriad of aspects before moving to Farmington, New Mexico for Devon Energy. He was an educator for San Juan College for the last seven years, specializing in Safety and Environmental Sciences. His dedication to keeping workers safe 247 crossed all barriers. John was known as a leader in his industry by all who knew and worked alongside him. He had special ties with many OSHA field offices and staff as well as TECS consultants and representatives worldwide. John proudly and honorably served his country in the military, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a medic stationed with the Marine Corps. John enjoyed building things, planting rose bushes, riding trains, collecting guns and hunting.
Survivors: Wife of 30 years, Patricia Prather daughter, Kim Jodi Martin and husband, Landon, and their children, Keaton Martin, Caden Martin and wife, Kayla, all of Weatherford son, Michael Prather Beck of Arlington daughter, Kimberley Thompson and husband, Terry and their daughter, Shaelynn two greatgrandchildren of Bloomfield, New Mexico, and cousins throughout Texas and Oklahoma.
