A memorial service will be held for John Elliott Johnson, longtime resident of Hobbs, at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 17, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Armstrong officiating. Internment will be at First Presbyterian Columbarium.
Born on February 10, 1922, in Admire, Kansas, Elliott was educated and married in Emporia, Kansas. Elliott and his wife Virginia came to Hobbs in 1947, where he pursued an accounting career. He enjoyed his years in a shared office with Barton Oil Co. as well as his association with oil and gas clients in Midland. Along with Jim Miller, he established the accounting firm of Johnson, Miller and Co., with offices in Hobbs and Midland. Employees honored Elliott as Hobbs Boss of the Year. He was a member of the Rotary Club, New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, and the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia, and many loving and devoted family members: daughters Margaret Carpenter and husband Les of Sumter, South Carolina, Mary Draper and husband Lloyd of Richardson, Texas, Marcia Schubert and husband Gary of Hobbs; sisters, Joleen Mann and Karen Johnson of Battlecreek, Michigan. He was the proud grandfather of Lance Carpenter and wife Mary, Sally Carpenter, Stephen Draper and wife Ann, Scott Draper, Lindsay Faulkner and husband Jonathan, Amy Donahue and husband Ben, and Clay and Emily Schuibert, and great-grandfather of Maggie, Zachary, and Evey Carpenter and Will Draper.
He was preceded in death by his parents Martin William and Selma Christine Johnson.
Elliott held the admiration and respect of relatives, friends, business associates, and community members. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Sam Kankanala and to the caring men and women of Elite Home Health Care, Vistacare Family Hospice, and Desert Gardens Assisted Living.
