John Forrest Gilbert, 80, of Hobbs, New Mexico, was born August 18, 1930, to Oren Forrest and Dorothy Shuff Gilbert Hamlin in Hutchison, Kansas. He married Barbara Winslow on September 26, 1955, in Falls Church, Virginia. He was a member of Civil Air Patrol. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a surveyor and worked as a surveyor in the oil field most of his life. He enjoyed square dancing and skiing. He was a member of the Jubilee Choir and played tuba with the Hobbs Community Band. He was a member of Taylor Street Church of Christ. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family and meeting his friends at Daylight Donuts.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Hobbs five children, Mike and wife Karen of Hobbs, Ginny Goelz of Shallowater, TX, Steve of Germany, Nancy and husband John Davis of Shallowater, TX, and Jim and wife Jessica of Benbrook, TX seven grandchildren ten greatgrandchildren and two nieces.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Taylor Street Church of Christ officiated by Minister Eli Borden. In lieu of flowers, you may make memorial contributions to the Jubilee Choir at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, 1700 E. Yeso, Hobbs, NM 88240 or to your favorite charity. Cremation will follow.
