Joanne Zespy, age 91, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 28, 2025, after experiencing complications from the flu. She was a beloved member of the Hobbs, New Mexico community; known for her warmth, generosity, and dedication to family and friends.
Joanne was born on April 03, 1933, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the eighth of nine children in the Zespy family. She arrived in Hobbs as a high school student after the passing of her mother. She was welcomed into the home of her older sister and brother-in-law, Gen and J.O. Smith, where she became a much-loved member of their household, sharing life with her twin nephews, Tim and Tom Smith, and with family nanny and housekeeper, Corine Hicks.
As an adult Joanne became a talented floral designer, working in the Smith family’s flower shop (Gen’s Flower Shop) where she created floral arrangements for countless weddings, celebrations, and memorials. Many customers became friends, drawn in by her kindness and signature warmth. Joanne was deeply involved in the Hobbs community. She generously volunteered her time for local events and served as the vice chairperson of the city’s cemetery board.
As time passed, Joanne took on the role of caregiver for her loved ones, spending the second half of her life ensuring that Gen, J.O., her older brother Eddie Zespy, and Corine were comfortable, cared for, and surrounded by love in their later years. Her dedication to family was steadfast, reflected in the countless drives to medical appointments and tender care she provided during their final days.
Joanne was known for her vibrant personality, her ever-present red lipstick, and her kindness, humor, and generous spirit. She will be dearly missed.
Joanne is survived by her brother, Gary (Donnis) Zespy of Fargo, North Dakota, as well as nieces and nephews.
