I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. 2nd Timothy 4:7. James Sturgill, also known as Jay, Jim, and Grandpaw Fish, finished his race on Thursday April 24, 2014 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
James was born on September 28, 1945 to James Leonard and Mary Page Sturgill in Redding, California. The family moved to Hobbs in 1954. He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1964. He was active in sports. He was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow.
He attended South Plains Junior college in Levelland, Texas. He met his future wife Sharon Pittman there. They were married in Levelland in 1968. They moved back to Hobbs in 1979. He worked in the oil industry for Rice Engineering and Safety Environmental Solutions, Inc. He also worked for Wieschmans Nursery. He graduated from New Mexico Junior College in 2004.
Jim was active in his childrens activities. He coached numerous baseball teams, served as President of the baseball league and also coached a Junior Olympic basketball team. He considered his children and grandchildren his greatest accomplishment and joy. He passed on the love of fishing to all. The grandchildren called him Grandpaw Fish.
Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hobbs where he drove the Senior Citizens church van, and was an associate member of the First United Methodist Church in Lovington.
He was preceded in death by his father James L. Sturgill, and his parentsinlaw Griff and Peggy Pittman.
He is survived by his wife Sharon of Hobbs son Ben and wife Christi Sturgill of Hobbs daughter Jeannie and husband Justin Alexander of Lovington mother Mary Sturgill of Hobbs brother Gene and wife Wreatha Sturgill of Tome, New Mexico sister Kim McLaughlin of Dallas, Texas and sisterinlaw Sharla and husband Mitchell Agnew of Allen, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jessica and Alyssa Sturgill of Hobbs Michael, Ashten, Craig and Audrey Alexander of Lovington a grandchild of the heart Kobe Hollingsworth of Lovington and good friend Bob Allen of Hobbs.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 8a.m. to 7 p.m. at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home, Hobbs, with family in attendance from 57 p.m. Visitation will be held again Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Memorial contributions may be made to Joe Arrington Cancer Center, Lubbock, Texas.
