alignjustifyMr. Veteto, 84, died March 8, 2009, at his home in Hobbs, New Mexico. He was born October 5, 1924, in Vernon, Texas. He mar- ried Vondal Jean O'Steen on December 21, 1946, in Vernon, Texas.
alignjustifyHe was born and raised in Vernon, Texas. He is the son of George and Vallie Veteto. He is one of four brothers: Clayton Tooter, Ray, Amby and Burton. After his mother passed away, he became a stepson to Clara and brother of Frances, Pete, Tommy, Charlie and Jr. Haseloff. He played football for Vernon High School, which he graduated from in 1942. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific fleet on the USS Vicksburg during World War II, where he witnessed the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. He and his wife, Vondal, were happily married for 62 years. Burton attended Texas Christian University and graduated as a Petroleum Geologist. He worked and lived throughout the Permian Basin and southeast New Mexico and moved to Hobbs in January of 1957.
alignjustifyHe is father to James Layne, deceased, and Mark Veteto of Hobbs. He was employed by Hobbs Pipe and Supply until 1976 when he became an Independent Petroleum Geologist. In 1988, Burton and his son Mark purchased MeTex Oil and Gas Inc. Burton still went to work every day until just before his passing.
alignjustifyHe is Granddaddy and Papa to Angela and Laura, Kali and Janey. He is a great-grandfather to Melissa, Megan, Brooke and Jaycie Layne. He is our favorite father-in-law to Patti and Ash. He is beloved Uncle Burton to Lula, Ginger, Bruce, Peggy and Dick, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews, all who adored him.
alignjustifyBurton will be remembered carrying a golf club and walking the neighborhood with his favorite dachshunds.
alignjustifyHe was a long-standing member and strong supporter of First United Methodist Church.
alignjustifySurvivors include his wife, Vondal of Hobbs, New Mexico; a son, Mark of Hobbs, New Mexico; a daughter-in-law, Patti; his grandchildren, Angela Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, Laura Akelroyd of Odessa, Texas, Kali Veteto of Fort Worth, Texas, and Janey Roan of Hobbs, New Mexico; five great-granddaughters; many nieces and nephews and their children around the country; and a grandson-in-law, Ash Roan.
alignjustifyAll were very close to Burton. He will be missed and treasured forever.
