alignjustifyFuneral services for James Belvin Abney of Hobbs, New Mexico, will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2009, at Taylor Street Church of Christ with Minister Mike Kennedy, assisted by Minister Dennis Atherton, officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park.
alignjustifyVisitation is noon-5 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday with the family attendance from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home and 8-11 a.m. Friday.
Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
alignjustifyMr. Abney, 91, died February 17, 2009, at Hobbs Health Care Center in Hobbs, New Mexico. He was born April 19, 1917, in Spur, Texas. He married Aline Abney on January 10, 1942, in Seminole, Texas.
alignjustifyMr. Abney was an active member of Taylor Street Church of Christ. He enjoyed woodworking, especially working with windmills. Mr. Abney liked to have his American flag flying at his home. He gave words of encouragement to many people over the phone.
alignjustifySurvivors include five sons, James R. Abney of Salem, Missouri, Leonard E. Abney of Hobbs, New Mexico, Raymie H. Abney of Hobbs, New Mexico, Sammy J. Abney of Hobbs, New Mexico, and John H. Abney of Riverton, Wyoming; six daughters, Roberta Altman of Lovington, New Mexico, Katberine E. White of Hobbs, New Mexico, Helen L. Sutton of Hobbs, New Mexico, Bonnie R. Hicks of Hobbs, New Mexico, Mary Jane Ward of Gallup, New Mexico, and Brenda E. White, of Lewisville, Texas; 40 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and two great- great grandchildren.
alignjustifyMr. Abney was preceded in death by his parents, James I. and Etta Abney; his wife, Aline Abney on January 4, 2002; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Pruitt; a son, Teddy M. Abney; and a grandson, Cody James Pace.
