J.R. Canon was born in Abilene, Texas, May 27, 1929, and reared on a family farm in Taylor County, Texas. He died Dec. 31, 2007.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at First Baptist Church with Pastor Wade Rials officishy;ating.
Mr. Canon will be in state 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday with the family in attendance from 6-8 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Canon; his son, Samuel Canon; his daughter, Jackie Taylor; his granddaughter, Meagan Canon; his grandson, Christopher Taylor; and his grandson, Daniel Taylor.
Having married Betty Lavoyce Holley on Nov. 24, 1949, and having graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1950, he joined the United States Air Force, being honorshy;ably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
Moving to Hobbs, N.M., in 1953 he began his tenure here with Oil Well Supply Company. In 1958 he began a distinshy;guished and far-reaching career as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant spanshy;ning 45 years, receiving innushy;merable awards for service and excellence.
His commitment to his God, his church and his family is well known and is an enduring legacy. His love of singing took him to revivals and song minshy;istries over wide areas in New Mexico and Texas. His leadershy;ship role in his home church was foundational, most recentshy;ly including Chairman of Deacons and Finance Chairman-Elect of First Baptist Church in Hobbs.
His life was an exemplary personification of a life well lived in service to God Almighty and for His glory.
He departed this life Dec. 31, 2007, ... old and full of years.
