Ivey D. Massey was born in Vernon, Texas on February 6, 1927. His childhood and school years were spent in various oil field towns. He moved to Portales, New Mexico where he graduated from high school. Ivey attended Eastern New Mexico College just long enough to meet his future wife, RoJean. Soon after, he joined the Navy because of the war. He returned on leave and they were married on May 11, 1945. After the Navy, Ivey worked in the oil field. The couple moved to Hobbs in 1948 and began Ivey Construction Co. Ivey later sold used cars, then owned Lam and Massey Insurance, which later became Massey Insurance. The couple spent about 40 years in the insurance business.
In 1958, the Masseys became charter members of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. Ivey was a 50-year member of Gideons International, served on the New Mexico Baptist Foundation for about ten years, and on the Baptist Annunity Board for eight years.
Ivey and RoJean have two daughters, Connie Massey of Hobbs, and Iva Jean Montgomery (husband Dewayne) of Lubbock. They have two granddaughters, Christy Lynch (husband Ben), of Lubbock, and Melissa Rubert (husband Tim), of Rochester, Washington. They also have nine great-grandchildren: James, Steven, Jacob, Jonathan, Caitlin and Daniel Lynch of Lubbock, and Dylan, Isabella and Faith Rubert of Rochester, Washington. Ivey leaves behind his wife of 75 years, RoJean, of Hobbs, two daughters, two granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren, one sister, Bettye Albers of Madill, Oklahoma, and nieces and nephews in Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Colorado.
