Hollice James Clay, Sr., Goose passed away Thursday, February 4 at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Lane Chapel CME Church, 1305 E Skelly, Hobbs, with Elder Keith Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Praire Haven memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday, February 11, 2011, 8 a.m. 6 p.m. at Chapel of Hope which is charge of arrangements.
Hollice was born September 17, 1941, in Brushie Prairie, Texas, To Clem and Lorene Clay. He was an all around student. He played in the band, as well as every sport that was offered in school.
He was an AllAmerican in basketball and track. Hollice was the 19581960 New Mexico Player of the Year, leading all scores and rebounds during his threeyear tenure. He was offered numerous collegiate scholarships.
He attended the University of Oklahoma and was a dedicated Sooner Alumni. After college, he played semiprofessional ball with the Harlem Stars until returning to Hobbs.
In 1964, he married Billie Ruth French and they shared over forty years together until her death. God blessed them with three children: Kimberly ClayBrown, Karen ClayFenderson and Hollice James Clay, Jr. preceded him in death. Hollice was an outstanding husband, father, fatherinlaw, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He had a loving and generous heart.
He worked for Texaco Oil Company for over thirty years before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorene wife, Billie Ruth brothers, Clarence, Billy and Leon, his son Hollice J. Clay, Jr. and his brotherinlaw, R. D. Rock Rockmore.
Hollice leaves to mourn, his father, Clem Clay and wife Katherine Clay, both of Hobbs his daughters, Kimberly ClayBrown and Karen ClayFenderson two sonsinlaw, Craig Brown and Wesley Fenderson, all of Los Angeles, California his brother, Donald Clay of Spring, Texas his sisters, Juanita Rockmore of Dallas, Texas, Climmie Ann Johnson and Debra Davis both of Hobbs sisterinlaw, Mildred Clay brothersinlaw, Raymond Johnson and Gershwin Davis five precious grandchildren, Craig Brown II of Los Angeles Xavier James Clay of Hobbs, Brookelynn, Brayden and Bailey Rae Fenderson of Los Angeles as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
