Helen Davis, 88, went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2017. She was the widower of
Henry James Davis, Sr. They shared 24 years of marriage and to this union three sons, Henry
Jr, Paul and Donald were born.
Born in Cornie, Arkansas on May 19, 1929, she was the daughter of Snead and Mabel Brown.
She came to Hobbs, NM in 1945 at the age of 16. She retired from New Mexico Junior College
in 1994 where she worked for 17 years.
Helen was a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years where she
served as usher. She enjoyed line dancing and was a member of the "Dancing Grannies",
loved talking on the phone, exercising, taking numerous water aerobics and weight training
classes, and socializing at the senior center. In 2012 Helen received the Community Service
Award from the Hobbs chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP). The New Mexico of African American recognized Helen for her "outstanding
accomplishments and contributions toward the improvement of lives for African Americans in
New Mexico" in May 2013.
Her parents, sister, Amy Grimes, her husband, Henry and two sons, Paul Lawrence and Donald
Albert preceded her in death.
Left to cherish her memory will be her son, Henry James Davis, Jr of Hobbs, NM; two
granddaughters, Ebony Nicole Hines and husband Brandon of Dallas, TX, Regina Ann Davis of
Roswell, NM; a grandson, Jonathan James Davis and wife Angela of Las Cruces, NM; six
great-granddaughters, Raygan Ryan Norwood, Carissa Aiyana Davis, Rayne Reece Norwood,
Hailey May Davis, Nylah Royale Hines and Leila Marie Davis, and one great-grandson, Kato
Paul Hines; nephew, James N. Grimes and niece, Angelia Carson, and numerous cousins.
The funeral service will be held at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, July 29,
2017 at 11:00 a.m. Helen will be cremated following the service per her wishes.
