Gonzalo "Johnny" Luna Osornio was born January 20, 1934 in Jilotepec, Mexico D.F.
He married Ramona Dominguez, January 3, 1973 in Lovington, NM. Gonzalo Luna Osornio mostly known to friends as "Johnny" Luna, came to work in Lea County in 1952 following his older brothers, Jorge and Raul, who were Brasero Pioneers. He moved to Hobbs in 1956 where he worked in the agricultural fields, railroad and construction jobs.
He began to work for the City of Hobbs in 1958 in the sanitation department was then promoted to the City Garage and Street Department, later to the parks and recreation. In 1969 he became one of the City of Hobbs first Hispanic firemen for what was then called Fire and Rescue.
During his service in the Army, Luna Osornio learned the importance of the English language, earned his general equivalency diploma and became certified in auto mechanics, bodywork and welding. Besides working for the Hobbs Fire Department and volunteer fire department to surrounding areas, in 1978 he earned his license in metal building construction. He owned and operated Luna's Welding and Body Shop.
Through the Hobbs Fire Department he attended Eastern New Mexico University and New Mexico State University where he received his emergency medical training certification and was a CPR instructor.
His hobbies included growing vegetables and tending to his "rancho" with his farm animals. He enjoyed cooking for everyone especially his family and friends.
His actions of bravery and unselfishness will live on through the many memories and stories of those who knew him. He had the upmost respect to the men and women of the armed forces, emergency first responders and officers of the peace. He became a naturalized citizen, voted in every election and was so proud to have had the opportunity to live in America.
He leaves behind his wife of over 40 years, Ramona Osornio, five children, sons; Gonzalo Luna, Jr, of Oklahoma City, OK, Joseph Osornio of Andrews, TX, three daughters; Yolanda Rodriquez of Grapevine, TX, Elena Williams of Methuene, MA, and Graciela Osornio-Vitt of Hobbs, NM, grandchildren; Gabriel, Fabian, Giselle, Natalie, and Christian and great-grandchildren.
