Gerald R. Martin, 79, passed away Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at his home. Gerald was born March 19, 1938 in Stamford, TX to J.W. and Dorothy Martin and was a 1956 graduate of Stamford High School. He received his Bachelor's degree from North Texas State College and his Master's degree from the University of Texas. On October 10th, 1959 he married Barbara Wright in Odessa, TX and they remained married until her death in 2005. Gerald and his family moved to Hobbs, NM in 1968 to begin his career at New Mexico Junior College. He taught mathematics for many years eventually becoming the Dean of the Health Science and Engineering Department. He had a passion for teaching and chose to end his career back in the classroom encouraging students to complete their education and reach their potential. Gerald spent his leisure time taking his family fishing and camping. He was an avid and competitive golfer and enjoyed playing golf with his friends and especially his family. Gerald was often seen at Ocotillo Golf course working on his game and hunting golf balls in the caliche pit next to the old #8 fairway. His proudest moment while playing golf Ocotillo was making a hole in one on #6. He also loved baseball and took advantage of any opportunity to watch a minor or major league game.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents J.W. and Dorothy, his sister Myrna, his wife Barbara and an infant son Bert. He is survived by his two children, Gerald "Bud" Martin and wife, Lori, from Hamptonville, NC; his daughter Gina Ruthart and her husband, Rodney, from Amarillo, TX; and his grandchildren Brayden Ruthart, Kati Ruthart, Alexandra Martin and Tessica Martin.
