Georgia Jean Turner, 86, of Hobbs went home to be with the Lord on July 9, 2014, in Lubbock, Texas. Georgia Jean was born February 17, 1928, to Jean Anson and Alberta Bell Quirk in Carson County, Texas, two miles north of Groom. She married Gaylon Turner on August 30, 1949, in Carson County. They have two sons, Gaylon Gene and Gerald Lynn.
Among her honors were twice Outstanding Woman of the Year in the Delta Kappa Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority of Lovington, past treasurer of the sorority, and designer of the scrapbook cover for the chapter. She served in all the offices in the chapter and held all the offices in the district as well as all elected state offices. She was listed in the 1967 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. In 1972, she was featured in the Personalities of the West and Midwest publication. Georgia Jean also won many awards for her needlepoint.
Her occupations included assistant manager of a radio station in Artesia and accounting in a bookkeeping firm in Hobbs.
Georgia Jean was a devout Christian who loved God, her family, and her church. She was a member of Church At Hobbs.
Everyone who knew her admired her strength and courage in the face of so much pain and suffering. She never complained. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. She will be remembered for her beautiful crocheted gifts and the lovely cards she sent to her friends and prayer partners. She always signed themAgapein her beautiful script.
Georgia Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jean Tom of Dumas, Texas, John of Fritch, Texas, Jack of Amarillo, Texas, and Jerry Dennis of Dickinson, Texas, and sister Evelyn W.H. Ollenger of Groom, Texas.
Georgia Jean is survived by her husband of 64 years, sons Gaylon Gene Robin of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Gerald Lynn Irene of Avondale, Arizona, and grandson Dakota of Waco, Texas. Other survivors include her sisters Shirley Bobby Husted of Irving, Texas, and Mary Nace Baggerman of Claude, Texas, and a dear niece Tronda Jack Foote of Idalou, Texas. Georgia is also survived by stepgrandaughters Kim Tim Rodgers of Guthrie, Texas, and Gloria Harrison of Portland, Oregon. Her greatgrandgrandsons who survive her are Dillon and Dalton Rodgers of Guthrie, Eric Thomas of Guthrie, and Indigo and Talkien Harrison of Portland. Her greatgranddaugher Sierra Harrison of Portland also survives her.
Public viewing will be Sunday from 16 p.m., and Monday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., at Chapel of Hope. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Church At Hobbs, 1600 East Bender, Hobbs, New Mexico, with Pastor John Ayers officiating. Interment will be at Prairie Haven Memorial Park following the service.
