Gene Whitehead was born on April 3, 1930 in a farm house between Faxon and Lawton, OK, to Albert and Bulah (Ward) Whitehead. His family moved to Roswell, NM, in 1942 and began farming. He married Bettye Ann Martin on June 9, 1950. They moved to Springfield, MO, where he attended Baptist Bible College. Gene served as a music leader and Sunday school teacher for many years. He also served as Chairman of the Deacons and was on numerous other committees for First Baptist Church in Hobbs, NM, where he was a member for 50 years. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the Rotary Club. Gene worked in farming, for the United States Postal Service, was the owner of Atlas Building Maintenance Co., and established B & G Transportation in 1981. Gene lived by his company motto, " touching many lives positively". Gene loved the Lord and teaching His Word, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by: his parents, Albert and Bulah(Ward) Whitehead; ten brothers and three sisters; Albert, Stanley, Jack, Byrn, Sarah, Frank, Paul, one infant, Russell, Pauline, Elmer, Evelyn, and Gail. He is survived by: his wife of sixty-five years, Bettye Martin Whitehead; daughter Peggy and (Alan) McAlister, son Mike and (Molly) Whitehead; Grandchildren Brad McAlister, Rebekah McAlister, Aaron and (Christina) Whitehead, Aarika Whitehead, Zane and (Joslyn)Elliott, Elizabeth Elliott, and Sean Elliott; great grandchildren Braydn Terrell and Tyler Whitehead; brothers Parks Whitehead and Billy Whitehead, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene went to be with the Lord on Sunday July 5, 2015. A viewing will be held on Wednesday July 8, 2015 from 2 - 8 pm with family to greet friends from 6 - 8 pm at Chapel of Hope. Services will be held at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church on Thursday July 9, 2015 at 10 am.
