Gene Thompson, of Hobbs, New Mexico, passed away January 21, 2014, at Baptist St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. He was born October 22, 1935, in Direct, Texas, to Clarence Alvin and Ruby Mae Thompson, who preceded him in death. One sister, Corrine Ford, also preceded him in death.
Gene is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Ann, of the home. One son, Mike Thompson Cheron two daughters, Charlotte Cusic and Jeannie Jessup Mike three grandsons, Kelby Clack, Kallum Clack, and Cody Thompson two granddaughters, Chelby Hinds and Taylor Thompson, all of Hobbs three sisters, Fauneil Dawes, Patsy Graum, and Claudine Hicks three nephews, Tommy Gene Graum, Ricky Dawes, and Shelby Dawes two nieces, Robbie Smith and Peggy Greer, all of Paris, Texas. Also, a special niece, Karen Hicks Taylor Brett of Amarillo, Texas.
Gene spent 44 years in Hobbs and loved the sport of drag racing, He had several cars and went anywhere he could to race them. He spent many weekends at Hobbs Industrial Air Park.
In 1971 Gene went into the trucking business with his cousin, JW Hicks. For 25 years, until the death of JW Hicks, they had Hicks and Thompson Trucking. He then went into business with his son Mike, and had Thompson Trucking, until he bought Buddys Oilfield Delivery Service in 2008. He was active in running that business until the time of his death.
Gene loved his family and grandchildren very much. He spent countless hours with them at family gatherings, barbeques, races, trips to the mountains, and watching the Hobbs Eagles play basketball.
Gene was known for his kindness, his quick wit, and sense of humor. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be from 8 am to 8 pm, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8pm, on Friday, January 24, 2014, and from 8am to noon, on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Chapel of Hope. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2014, officiated by Pastor Jimmy Crawford, at Bethel Baptist Church on the Denver City Highway, Hobbs, New Mexico. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Hobbs, New Mexico.
