Francisco Ortega

August 21, 1931 — April 5, 2018

Francisco B. Ortega, 86, was born August 21, 1931 in Kent, Texas. He was a former oilfield worker and avid Cowboys fan, passed away Thursday at his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Frank served his country in the 537th Field Artillery Battalion in Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1954 where he received a National Defense Service Medal.

Frank was retired from the oilfield industry. While employed as a supervisor, he was a meticulous heavy equipment operator and was highly sought after because he never hit a line.

During Frank's retirement you could see him tending to his lawn. Frank and his wife, Belin, won Home of the Month back in 1991. Frank also appeared as one of the top stories in the Hobbs News Sun in 1996 for losing part of his front lawn due to the installation of a traffic signal light at his corner property. In 1999, he was again featured in the Hobbs News Sun for summertime chores while trimming his evergreens. Golfers often commented how they would love to tee off on his grass.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Belin Ortega, whom he loved so much that he married her twice: one civil ceremony and one Catholic ceremony. Frank was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings Elias, Rito, Geneva, Elfida, Felipa, Manuela, Maria Santos, Magarito, Eutiquio, and Ismael. He is survived by his children, Robert Rascon & wife Lupe, Francisco R Ortega, Jr., Chriselda Love, Deborah Aranda and husband Efren, Patricia Rowley-D'Angelo, Angela Pinon and husband David, his sisters, Maria Santos Garza and Linda Benavidez, 14 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren.

As anyone of his children will attest to, he was fond of saying, "Don't let the grass grow under your feet."

We can't find anyone to confirm this but he was known to play numerous football pots during the season. You could often find him watching the games with several (up to 7 or 8) football pots on his lap. He took his love for the Dallas Cowboys to the grave.

A special thanks to Kindred Care Hospice and to Rebecca and Patricia.
