Ernestine Claire Calloway Wimberly, or Ernie to friends and family, went to Heaven June 24, 2023. She lived 91 incredible years and was a delight to all who knew her. She was humble, soft spoken, faithful, and resilient.
Ernie was the youngest of three children born to Ernest Chester Calloway and Lovedy Kenneth McCrimmon on October 31, 1931. She met William A. Wimberly in North Carolina and married him on July 24, 1955, in Manly, NC. Shortly thereafter they moved to Hobbs, NM. She and Bill spent their time together traveling the world and volunteering their time. Ernie was a beloved teacher for 32 years.
After retirement Ernie enjoyed spending time with her friends. They traveled, quilted, had weekly card game evenings. She loved volunteering at her church and other local non-profit organizations. Anytime someone needed a ride to the doctor she was there, and most times they slipped in a quilting store.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hobbs, where she served as an Elder. She was a member of the Piece Makers Quilting Association and the Nimble Thimble Quilting Group. The beautiful quilts she made through the years will be cherished for generations.
Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and her brother, John Calloway. She is survived by her sister Frances Caskey of Clemson, SC, sister-In-law, Rebecca Calloway, and brother-in-law, Garland Wimberly of Hobbs NM, and 10 nieces, 2 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family request in lieu of flowers that donation be made to First Presbyterian Church or Habitat for Humanity of Hobbs.
