Elmer Gene Roberts, 85, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 in Hobbs, New Mexico. Visitation for the family and friends will be from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Crosswinds Community Church formerly Northside Baptist. Interment will follow the service at Memory Gardens.
Gene was born April 26, 1926 in Shidler, Oklahoma to Elmer and Ava Roberts. He was raised with four sisters and three brothers. He married Elois Lambert on December 21, 1946 in Hobbs, New Mexico. Gene moved to Hobbs with his family when he was three years old. He attended graduated from Hobbs High School.
He was a World War II Navy veteran. He joined the Navy in December 1942. He attended radio school in Bryan, Texas and served on the U.S.S. Mobil ship for two and a half years, serving in the Pacific Islands until October 1945. He was discharged on April 13, 1946. One month after resuming civilian life, he had a blind date at the First Baptist church in Hobbs, New Mexico that was to change his life. That was when he first met Elois Lambert. They married on December 21, 1946.
Gene began working for Cities Service Oil Company in August of 1950 and retired with them on May 1, 1988 after 38 years. He also worked parttime for many years as a cabinet builder wood worker for the Hobbs Fixture Company. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church since 1963. After retiring, RVing became their pastime they traveled, especially spending summers in Ruidoso, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Ava: two brothers, Warren Garold: three sisters, Movella, Eleneor and Juanita.
He is survived by his wife, Elois of Hobbs, NM Daughter, Judy Hardin husband, Lyndon of Lubbock, Tx. 2 grandchildren: Bryan Hardin wife, Amanda of Waco,Tx Sharla and husband Derek Osburn of Clovis, NM Four great grandchildren: Aspyn, Makaidyn, Pacyn and Jaelyn. One sister, Doris Stewart husband, Olin of Hobbs, NM one brother, Jimmy Roberts wife, Joan of Jacksonville, Fl.
Gene shared most of his life with his wife, Elois who loved him faithfully and dearly during their 64 years of marriage. They were looking forward to their 65th anniversary in a few days on Dec. 21st. Together they forged a life of love and ministry to their church and family. Their family, church and ministry were the treasures of their life. Donations may be sent to Vista Care Hospice or Crosswinds Community Church.
