Dr. Mayes

June 19, 1926 — June 21, 2019

Dr. Dixie L. Mayes passed away on June 21, 2019 in Hobbs at the age of 93. She was born on June 19, 1926 on a farm in Loveland, Oklahoma to J. E. and Vada (Cooper) Hewett. Her family moved to Amarillo, Texas and it was there that, as a teenager, she met the love of her life Doyle L. Mayes. They eloped and married in Clovis, New Mexico on February 6, 1943. They were happily married for fifty-three years until Doyle's death in 1996. They raised three children, Cheryl, Jim, and Steve who all grew up and still reside in Hobbs.
Dixie graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee in 1947. She and her husband worked with Dr. Davis in Hobbs, until they opened Drs. Mayes & Mayes in 1957. She was the first woman Optometrist appointed to the New Mexico Board of Examiners. Dixie loved being an Optometrist and saw patients well into her 80's. She was a member of the F.O.E Women's Auxiliary for years and a lifelong member of the Eastern Star Bethany Chapter #56. Dixie loved working outside in her flower beds and spending time with her family.
Dixie leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter, Cheryl Whitehead, two sons, Jim Mayes and wife Diana, Steve Mayes and wife Paula; one brother H.E. Hewett and wife Pat, nine grandchildren, Wade Whitehead and wife LeAnn, Teresa Bullock and husband Tommy, Cynthia Hawley and husband Jim, Daniel Mayes and wife Erica, Lanna Mayes, Kenneth Mayes, Kara Grantham and husband Clay, Brandon Mayes, Kyle Mayes and wife Kimberly, eleven great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, one niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Doyle Mayes, her parents J. E. and Vada Hewett, one brother William Ray Hewett and wife Helen, and one son-in-law, Sanford Whitehead.
