Douglas Stogner

Douglas Lee Doug Stogner completed his good hard work of over 92 years here on this Earth and went West on July 5, 2012. Doug, a long time resident of Hobbs, New Mexico, was born September 25, 1919 in Hastings, Cotton County, Oklahoma to Doyle Tracy Stogner and Nannie Mae McGee Stogner.

Dougs childhood and early adult life was spent working on the family farm. Football was his passion while attending Temple High School in Temple, Oklahoma. After graduating in 1940 Doug continued working on the family farm as well as taking jobs on other farms and ranches in Oklahoma and Texas. He also was a long haul truck driver throughout the southern United States, all to support the war effort on the Home Front. In 1943 Doug met and fell in love with Anita Coquease Williams. In a small ceremony held in Duncan, Oklahoma on February 11, 1944, Doug and Anita were married. The young couple remained in the State, where Doug eventually left farm life behind and took up a life time career in the Oil Patch. In 1960 they moved their two sons to settle in Hobbs. In 1974, after raising their two sons, a beautiful daughter added great joy to their lives. In Hobbs Doug worked for various oil and gas drilling services and retired from Bull Rogers Casing Crews, Inc. in the midnineties.

Doug was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Master Mason he maintained his membership with the Velma A.F. A.M. Lodge No. 54 located in Velma, Oklahoma since his initiation in 1957. In 1972 Doug was introduced to the sport of soaring where he joined the Hobbs Soaring Society and Soaring Society of America. He often flew the local soaring clubs sailplanes however, he specialized in maintaining and operating the ground launch equipment the soaring community will remember Doug as the worlds leading winch launch operator in the U. S. Doug proudly served on the Board of Directors of the National Soaring Foundation based in Hobbs from the mid80s until 2006. Doug assisted in and worked hard to assure that every soaring contest and event held in Hobbs from 1974 to 2006 ran efficiently and smoothly.

Besides soaring Doug also enjoyed fishing, small game hunting, watching football and collage basketball, and working and tinkering on cars and anything mechanical.

Doug is survived by two sons, Lynn Stogner, of Hobbs and Michael Stogner, and wife Linda, of Estancia, New Mexico daughter, Starla Talavera of Austin, Texas three grandsons, Michael and Noah Talavera, also of Austin, and Tracy Stogner of Andrews, Texas great granddaughter Summer Stogner a great grandson, Camron three younger brothers, Warren Austin Stogner of Decatur, Texas, Marshall Franklin Stogner of Austin, Texas, and Doyle Tracie Stogner, Jr. of Roanoke, Texas and a caring niece that assisted in Dougs wellbeing this past year Janie Jo Woodard now residing in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Doug is preceded in death by his beloved wife Anita of 66 years parents three sisters, Ouida Mae Stogner, Jessie Pauline Brown, and Janie Ruth Andrews and two brothers, Perry Dale Stogner and Joel Mack Stogner.

A celebration of Dougs life will be held at the Chapel of Hope in Hobbs on July 9, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Small officiating. Dougs final earthly journey will take him back home to his birthplace where he will be laid to rest, along with the ashes of his beloved Anita, at the Temple Cemetery in Temple Oklahoma Wednesday. It is on this hallowed ground that Dougs parents, grandparents, brother Perry, sister Ouida Faye, numerous family members, and friends from his early life will be waiting to welcome Doug and Anita to join them in eternal peaceful sleep.
