Funeral services for Dorothy Ides Roe Bernard of Hobbs will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Pastor Luke Seamon of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will take place after services at Memory Gardens.

Visitation is Thursday, July 15, from 5 7 p.m. at Chapel of Hope. The family will greet friends at that time.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Bernard, 93, died July 13, 3010, at Heartland Care of Hobbs. She was born December 9, 1916, in Emerson, Nebraska.

She married William Phillip Bernard in Ponca, Nebraska, on June 23, 1939. He died September 24, 1993.

Dorothy began her teaching career at age 15 in country schools outside Emerson, Nebraska. She attended Midland College in Fremont, NE, and taught school in Ponca, NE, where she met her husband. The couple moved to South Sioux City, NE, where she taught school and raised her three children Bill, Jr., Diane and Cindy. Dorothy finished her bachelors degree at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1963. She taught first grade in Sioux City Schools until she retired at age 65.

She and William moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1990. Dorothy loved learning, teaching and caring for her family and loved ones. She enjoyed playing bridge, writing letters and entertaining. As her last cousin said, Dorothy was always the sunny one.

She was Lutheran and a member of the Bahai faith.

Survivors include a son, William R. Bernard of Beltsville, Maryland two daughters, Diane Paule of Mission Viejo, California and Cindy VanDerSteere of Hobbs six granddaughters two grandsons four greatgranddaughters and one greatgrandson.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and two sisters.
