Doroteo Garza

February 6, 1926 — July 18, 2009

alignjustifyFight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life in which you were called 1 Timothy 6:12.

alignjustifyOn July 18, 2009, God's hands opened to take home our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Doroteo Ted B. Garza Sr., age 83. Doroteo Garza Sr. was born February 6, 1926, in Bay City, Texas, to Agapito and Ruperta Garza. He was the fifth oldest of twelve children.

alignjustifyHe spent his early childhood in Bay City before moving to Lamesa, Texas. As a young man he met the love of his life. In 1943, he married Maria Rodriguez. She was a faithful, loving, loyal wife and mother to their eight children.

alignjustifyDoroteo and his fami1y moved to Hobbs in 1954 where he worked in the construction business with his brothers. He then worked and retired from Frontier Construction where he was employed for over fifteen years. One of Doroteo's greatest passions in life after his family was his love of working.

alignjustifyHe was a self-taught builder, bricklayer and cement mason. He was known by his family as being a workaholic and was active in the concrete business until the age of 82. His wife was always laughing at how he would follow concrete trucks that were driving down the road to see what work was being done when he was not working on a job himself.

alignjustifyHe took great pride in his home, which he had remodeled extensively having done all of the work himself. He had a great love of gardening and was excited every year for spring to come so he could get out in his yard and plant flowers.

Even though his given name, was Doroteo, he was known by all of his friends as Father. Doroteo was very witty and loved to tell jokes. He also loved to give all of his family nicknames, which will remain very special and dear to them for the rest of their lives. In addition to being known as a hard worker, Dorotea was also known for his keen fashion sense.

He was always easily recognizable by one of his signature hats, Stacy Adams shoes, diamond jewelry and sharp suits. Most important to Doroteo was his love and service to the Lord. Doroteo was an active memer of Templo Alabanza Church for many years. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember him as a giant among men, but also as a tender, gentle and supportative father and grandfather who encouraged them in their successes and helped them over the rough spots of life.

Doroteo lived and enjoyed a full life. He always had a smile on his face and never a frown. He loved and cherished his wife and family above all else except his love of the Lord. He married a beautiful woman who loved and adored him during their 65 years of marriage. He was respected and loved by all who came to know him. Esteemed by his peers, he will be greatly missed and not soon forgotten.

Doroteo was preceded in death by his parents, Agapito and Ruperta Garza; his brothers, Cayetano, Jose, Daniel, Ernesto and Pedro; his sisters, Ursula and Geneva; his daughter and son-in-law, Yolonda and George Scott; and his grandchildren, Joseph Lopez and Veronica Scott. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 65 years, Maria Garza; his sister, Ruby Sanchez; his brother, Adolph Garza; his sons, Doroteo Jr. Yvonne, Raymond Mary and Ray Betsy; his daughters, Ruby Villegas Salvador, Betty Mara, Rachel McCain Richard and Teresa Shed Phillip; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Garza will be in state Tuesday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A celebration of Doroteo's life will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park.
