Doris D. Williams, of Hobbs, NM died December 2, 2012 in Hobbs. A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, December 6 at First Presbyterian Church at 10 AM with Pastor Harold Armstrong officiating.
Doris was born Feb. 18, 1927 in Maud, TX, to Herman J. and Annie Elizabeth Downs. She was the 8th of 9 children. She married J. O. Jake Williams in 1951 and Stanley F. Donner in 2005.
Doris had an extraordinary life. She graduated from Avinger High School at the age of 16 and enrolled in East Texas State Teachers College. She graduated with honors at the age of 18. She coached girls high school basketball and had players that were older than she was the 1st year she taught in Texas. She was offered a teaching job in Hobbs, NM in 1948 and taught 3rd grade for 5 years, including the first year Broadmoor Elementary was opened.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Oil Wives, and was an outstanding bridge player. Doris was well known for her random acts of kindness, and as a contributor to the arts in Lea County. She was awarded the Tom Mason Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Community Players of Hobbs. She was a 60 year member of 1st Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and served as a Deacon and Trustee. Doris and Jake founded and operated Globe Construction Co. for 45 years.
Doris is survived by her sons Don Williams and wife Nancy, and Guy Williams and wife Sherry, both of Hobbs, granddaughters Melinda and husband Jon Spurgeon of Lubbock, and Allison Williams of Chicago, brothers Earl Downs of Sulfur Springs, TX and Arthur Downs of Avinger, TX, a sister, Hulene Taylor of Longview, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters, husbands J.O. Jake Williams and Stanley F. Donner, and a son Mel Rex Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, 920 Turner Street, Hobbs, NM, 88240, or to Community Players of Hobbs, P.O. Box 2581 Hobbs, NM 88241.
