Doris Craig went to meet her Heavenly Father on June 28th, 2012, at the age of 98, after a lengthy illness.
Edna Doris Eubanks Craig was born February 16, 1914, in Tatum, New Mexico. Her parents, Swain and Winnie Eubanks homestead in Tatum in 1907. New Mexico didnt become a state till 1912 and at the time Doris was born, Tatum was in Chaves County which is on her birth certificate. Tatum was added to Lea County in 1917. She was one of four children born to Swain and Winnie Eubanks.
Doris started and completed high school in Tatum and graduated valedictorian. Doris later attended Texas Tech University. Doris and Wilmer grew up as childhood sweethearts in Tatum and they were married 64 years before he passed away September 13, 1993. He was the love of her life.
She was baptized at the age of 12 in a stock tank in Tatum. Her parents helped start the Church of Christ in Tatum in 1909. Doris and Wilmer were members of the Taylor Street Church of Christ except for a period of time when they helped build and start Jefferson Street Church of Christ. After it was well established they returned and worshiped at Taylor Street Church of Christ till their health gave away. Doris taught Sunday School in Tatum till they moved to Chicago, Illinois, for Wilmer to go to Koan Electric School for his electrical license.
They moved back to Hobbs and lived here from 1942 till the present. They saw many changes during this time in Hobbs. Wilmer worked at the Air Base till it closed and then they opened Craig Electric in 1943, which they ran till Wilmer had a heart attack in 1956 Doris was the bookkeeper and salesman. She was written up in several magazines for selling so many water pumps. As the results of Wilmers health problems, Eddy became the new owner of Craig Electric.
In her younger years Doris was active in the 4H and then later in the Triangle Extension Club. She was a 4H Leader and a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader.
Doris and Wilmer were active in the Antique Car club. They rebuilt cars and had several prizewinning cars of which Doris has many trophies to show for. Roadrunner Antique Car Club made her Honorary Lifetime member in 2009 and presented her with a trophy for this honor. She loved to go deer hunting with the family and she killed a large buck, the head of which is mounted and is hanging in her den. She enjoyed fishing in her younger years and driving the boat. Wilmer and Doris enjoyed traveling and traveled to 47 states and four foreign countries.
They went to Jerusalem to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary. She had the honor of being Lea County Pioneer in 1998 with Mary Lea Norris. After Wilmers death, Doris worked at Fayes Treasures with her daughter, Faye Harper. She enjoyed this as she shared her knowledge of New Mexico, in the earlier times, with customers and the way she traveled to school and lived. She had a passion for watching the weather station and waiting for the mail truck the last few years. Her great granddaughter, Shara Havins of Odessa made sure Doris received cards and letters each week. Before the onset of her illness in 1989 she enjoyed doing needlework and making quilts. She hand sewed oneinch squares for a queen size bedspread. She loved working with ceramics and giving the finished pieces to friends. Doris bowled on several leagues in her younger years.
Surviving her are a son, Eddy Lee Craig, of Hobbs a daughter, also her care giver since 1989, Faye Craig Harper of Hobbs four grandchildren including Sharla and husband Greg Conway of Hobbs, Sharon and husband, Dr. Doug Sherman of Corrales, NM, Royce Craig and wife, Kathy of Friendship, TX, Cheri Hukins of Hobbs 8 greatgrandchildren including Shara and Ryan Havens of Odessa Craig Hukins of Odessa, Chad Black of Missouri, Trent, Kathie, Maggie and J.T. Craig, all of Friendship niece, Jean Laird and husband, Johnny of Las Cruces nephews, Earl Craig and wife, Sherry of Lubbock, M,J. Craig and wife, Rubylee of Lubbock and one sisterinlaw, Helen Eubanks of Petaluma, California.
Doris was proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years in 1993 her daughterinlaw, Nan Craig in 2009 her brother, Tom Eubanks in 2008 two sisters, Jimmie Eubanks in 2000 and Andylene Craig in 2012.
Funeral Services for Doris Craig will be Monday July 2, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at Chapel of Hope with D.A. Cochran officiating assisted by Minister Doug Crum. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 1, 1 4 p.m. at Chapel of Hope.
